The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal — small in size, yet surprisingly diverse in atmosphere and landscapes. In the west, you’ll find dramatic cliffs, sea caves, breathtaking ocean views, and unforgettable sunsets. The southern coast and eastern side, closer to Spain, are flatter and calmer, with long beaches, warmer waters, and a more relaxed vibe.
If you don’t have much time, in this section, I offer 3 ready-made road trip routes: Purple, Orange, and Blue. My favorite is the Orange one. House icons mark the places where I recommend staying overnight.
My routes are not built only around the most touristy spots — otherwise, it would simply be a repeat of guides that already exist. I’m much more interested in showing lesser-known, atmospheric, and truly special places that often remain outside standard travel itineraries. However, you can visit the noisy and crowded Albufeira and Portimão, as well as the calm and quiet Quarteira.
This route runs along the southern coast of the Algarve — more classic, sunny, and postcard-like in its scenery.
It starts in the wild and windy Sagres, then continues to the beautiful coves of Praia da Ingrina. From there, the journey moves into more lively coastal towns: Lagos (a great place to stay overnight), the peaceful Alvor, the picturesque Ferragudo, and the charming Carvoeiro.
Next is the famous Benagil area. Here you can park your car and start a stunning coastal hike towards Praia de Nossa Senhora da Rocha, a small chapel perched on the cliffs near Porches. The walking distance is about 6 km one way, with incredible ocean views along the entire route. You can either return on foot or take a taxi/Uber back to your car. Take a break in the cafes there.
Further along the route lies Olhos de Água, a more relaxed beach town with a resort feel and warm, calm waters.
This area is also perfect for hiking in general. There are especially beautiful cliff trails around Carvoeiro (including Algar Seco and scenic viewpoints) and peaceful coastal walks in the Alvor area, with dunes, boardwalks, and lagoon landscapes.
Overall, this route combines iconic Algarve highlights with some of the best coastal walks and viewpoints in the region.
