Alcoutim
Alcoutim is a quiet town in eastern Algarve, right on the border with Spain, along the Guadiana River. It feels completely different from the coastal Algarve — slower, more local, and almost untouched by tourism.
Across the river lies Sanlúcar de Guadiana, Spain (in the photo), and the two towns face each other like mirrors. You can take a small ferry between them, or even cross the river by zipline — one of the few places in Europe where you “travel through time” due to the time difference between Portugal and Spain.
Alcoutim is more about atmosphere than sights: white houses, narrow streets, quiet river views, and a sense of stillness. It’s a place to slow down, walk along the water, and stay for a night or two rather than just pass through.
The road there is part of the experience itself — rolling hills, emptiness, and scattered villages.
It feels like you’ve reached some kind of “edge of Portugal".
