Santa Luzia & Praia do Barril
Santa Luzia is a small, charming fishing village in the eastern Algarve, part of the Tavira area and often called the “Octopus Capital” of Portugal because octopus (polvo) is the local specialty and served in many waterfront restaurants.
Things to see:
The village sits right on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with calm tidal lagoons and colorful fishing boats tied up along the harbor. It has an authentic Portuguese feel — low buildings, narrow lanes, and seafood markets where local fishermen sell their catch each morning.
Octopus fishing and cuisine: Local fishermen use traditional clay pots to catch octopus at night, and by midday the fresh catch is cooked in restaurants all around the waterfront.
Boat trips: Small ferries and boat tours run from the waterfront to nearby beaches and islands during the high season (approx. €2–€3 return to Praia da Terra Estreita / Praia do Barril).
Ria Formosa lagoon: Quiet paths and waterways make it a pleasant place for a walk, birdwatching, or a relaxed coffee by the water.
Not far from Santa Luzia, you can reach the entrance to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You can drive there and park for free along the roadside. From the park entrance, you can either walk to Praia do Barril or take a small tourist train (€2 one way) directly to the beach.
Praia do Barril is a long sandy beach on the Ilha de Tavira sandbar, south of Santa Luzia.
This beach is known for its anchor cemetery — a field of rusted anchors left as a memorial to the former tuna fishing industry that once thrived here.
The beach is part of the same sandbar stretch that includes Praia da Terra Estreita, offering wide, calm sands and shallow water ideal for swimming and long walks. Keep in mind that there are a few cafes, souvenir shops, and a restaurant at the park if you want to stay longer.
