This self-drive route will take you through the UNESCO-listed town of Sintra, the medieval village of Óbidos, the famous surfing destination of Nazaré, the historic city of Leiria, and the impressive Mira de Aire Caves. Along the way, you will explore Tomar, the city of the Knights Templar, visit Monsanto, often called Portugal’s most unique stone village, and finish in Castelo Branco, one of the most interesting cities in Portugal’s interior.

This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to discover Portugal beyond the typical tourist attractions and experience its rich history, natural beauty, and local culture at their own pace.

Central Portugal offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching throughout the year. Wetlands, coastal lagoons, estuaries, and agricultural landscapes attract a wide variety of resident and migratory birds.

The locations marked on this map are places where I have personally observed birds during my travels (Bird Observation Spots). Depending on the season, you may spot flamingos, storks, herons, egrets, spoonbills, birds of prey, and many other species.
