Talasnal, the hidden small village in the mountains of Serra da Lousã, is about half an hour from Coimbra.
The village is built into the hillside with narrow stone pathways, dark slate houses, wooden shutters, and small terraces overlooking the mountains. There are moments there — especially in the evening after most visitors leave — when the silence becomes almost unreal. The lights glow softly against the stone walls, and all you hear is wind, distant birds, or the forest itself.
Someone once told me that only one person still lives in Talasnal. That is not actually true, but I understand why people say it. Like many mountain villages in central Portugal, Talasnal was nearly abandoned during the last century as people moved toward larger cities and the coast. At one point, only a handful of residents remained, and the village came very close to disappearing altogether.
Today, Talasnal has been partially restored. A few families and permanent residents still live there, along with guesthouses, small restaurants, and houses used seasonally by people escaping city life. But even now, outside weekends and holidays, it can feel almost empty. Walking through the village at night, you may genuinely wonder whether anyone is there at all.
For me, Talasnal is not really about “things to do.” It is more about slowing down. Spending a night or two there makes much more sense than rushing through for an hour. The surrounding forests, mountain roads, and hiking trails between villages like Casal Novo create a side of Portugal that feels completely different from the Algarve or Lisbon.
It is also not a polished or luxurious destination. The roads are narrow and winding, parking is limited, and in colder or rainy weather the atmosphere can become almost severe and melancholic. But that is exactly what gives Talasnal its character. It feels like a glimpse into an older, quieter Portugal that still exists far from the country’s better-known tourist routes. Visit in late May to early July and September to early October if your priority is dry weather, clear virews, and the lowest chance of fog.
